IndiaAI and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in India’s healthcare sector.
The collaboration marks a major step toward improving healthcare delivery and public health outcomes through scalable and ethical AI-based solutions.
Role of Digital India Corporation (DIC)
The initiative is being implemented through the Digital India Corporation (DIC), which functions under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
Digital India Corporation plays a key role in supporting the government’s Digital India programme by developing and implementing digital technology projects across sectors such as:
- Governance
- Healthcare
- Artificial Intelligence
- Cybersecurity
- Digital infrastructure
- Innovation ecosystems
DIC acts as the implementation agency for several national digital initiatives and works to strengthen India’s digital economy and technology ecosystem.
Partnership Between Technology and Healthcare Institutions
The MoU combines:
- IndiaAI’s AI ecosystem, computing infrastructure, and digital platforms
- ICMR’s expertise in biomedical research and public health
The partnership aims to build a nationally integrated and interoperable AI ecosystem for healthcare in India.
Key Objectives of the Collaboration
Under the agreement, the two institutions will jointly promote:
- AI innovation in healthcare
- Biomedical AI research
- Ethical and responsible AI deployment
- Data-driven public health solutions
- Capacity building and AI skilling initiatives
The collaboration seeks to strengthen healthcare technology while ensuring data privacy, ethical safeguards, and regulatory compliance.
AIKosh Platform to Host Biomedical Datasets
One of the major components of the partnership is the integration of ICMR datasets into the AIKosh platform.
ICMR will contribute:
- Anonymised health research datasets
- Ethics-approved biomedical data
- AI models and toolkits
These resources will be developed under ICMR’s MIDAS framework.
The move is expected to provide researchers, startups, and innovators with wider access to high-quality healthcare datasets for AI development.
IndiaAI to Provide High-Performance Computing Access
As part of the collaboration, IndiaAI will provide ICMR with access to:
- GPU-based computing infrastructure
- High-performance computing systems
These facilities will be made available at subsidised rates under defined service agreements.
The initiative aims to address infrastructure limitations that often restrict large-scale AI research in healthcare and biomedical sciences.
AI Solutions for Public Health Challenges
The partnership will also support the co-development of AI-powered healthcare solutions to address major public health challenges in India.
The solutions will be based on:
- ICMR’s disease burden data
- IndiaAI’s AI and computing technology stack
The collaboration aims to improve disease prediction, diagnosis, healthcare management, and public health planning through advanced AI applications.
Building on Earlier Global AI Collaboration
The MoU builds upon earlier collaboration between IndiaAI and ICMR.
In September 2025, IndiaAI and ICMR’s National Institute for Research in Digital Health and Data Sciences (NIRDHDS) were recognised as Pioneer Countries under the HealthAI Global Regulatory Network (GRN).
The initiative was co-founded with the United Kingdom and Singapore to strengthen responsible governance of AI in healthcare globally.
Later, a tripartite MoU among IndiaAI, ICMR-NIRDHDS, and HealthAI further strengthened cooperation in healthcare AI governance.
Focus on Ethical and Responsible AI
The government emphasized that the collaboration will prioritize:
- Ethical AI deployment
- Data privacy protection
- Responsible innovation
- Regulatory compliance
The initiative aims to ensure that AI technologies are developed and used in ways that are safe, transparent, and beneficial for public healthcare systems.
Strengthening India’s Digital Health Ecosystem
The IndiaAI–ICMR partnership reflects India’s growing focus on integrating advanced technologies into healthcare and public policy.
By combining AI infrastructure with medical research expertise, the collaboration is expected to accelerate innovation in diagnostics, disease management, and healthcare accessibility while supporting India’s broader digital health transformation goals.
