1. Tanvi Sharma Wins Taipei Open Super 300

• Seventeen-year-old Indian badminton player Tanvi Sharma created history by winning the Taipei Open 2026, a BWF World Tour Super 300 event.
• In the women’s singles final on August 2, Sharma defeated Vietnam’s Nguyen Thuy Linh 21–16, 21–16 in just 36 minutes.
• It was Sharma’s maiden BWF Super 300 title and ended India’s 18-year wait for a women’s singles champion at the Taipei Open after Saina Nehwal’s 2008 triumph.
• Sharma also became the youngest champion in the tournament’s history. The victory further establishes her as one of India’s promising young badminton stars.

2. N. Chandrasekaran Resigns as Tata Sons Chairman

• N. Chandrasekaran has resigned as Chairman of Tata Sons, the principal holding company of the Tata Group.
• He announced his decision on August 12, 2026, but will continue until his current term ends on February 20, 2027.
• Chandrasekaran became Tata Sons chairman in 2017 after Ratan Tata’s retirement and oversaw major expansion into aviation, semiconductors, electronics, batteries and digital businesses.
• Reports indicate that differences concerning governance, capital allocation and his reappointment contributed to the decision.
• His departure marks an important leadership transition for the Tata Group, one of India’s largest business conglomerates.

3. PM Modi Releases Ram Nath Kovind’s Autobiography

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi released former President Ram Nath Kovind’s autobiography, Triumph of the Indian Republic: My Life, My Struggles, on August 12, 2026, at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.
• The book chronicles Kovind’s journey from his early life and struggles to his legal and political career and eventual service as India’s 14th President from 2017 to 2022.
• The autobiography offers personal insights into the experiences and values that shaped his public life. PM Modi addressed the gathering and highlighted Kovind’s contribution to India’s constitutional and democratic institutions.
• The book provides an important account of contemporary Indian public life.

4. Lebanon Becomes First West Asian Country to Abolish Death Penalty

• Lebanon has abolished the death penalty, becoming the first country in West Asia/Middle East to formally do so.
• The Lebanese Parliament approved legislation in August 2026 by a majority of its 128 members. Under the new law, death sentences are replaced with life imprisonment with aggravated hard labour.
• Lebanon had maintained an unofficial moratorium on executions since 2004, although courts continued issuing death sentences. At the end of 2025, around 85 people were reportedly facing death sentences.
• The move represents a significant human-rights development in the region and brings Lebanon closer to the global trend toward abolition of capital punishment.

5. Tamil Nadu Seeks Freeze on Lok Sabha Strength at 543

• The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed a resolution urging the Union government to permanently retain the Lok Sabha’s existing strength of 543 seats.
• The resolution, moved by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, opposes a fresh delimitation exercise based on population changes that could alter the representation of southern states.
• Tamil Nadu argues that states that successfully controlled population growth should not lose parliamentary representation.
• The Assembly also sought implementation of 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies without waiting for fresh delimitation.
• The issue is linked to the constitutional delimitation debate and regional concerns over political representation.

6. Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel ‘Shruti’ Launched

• The Indian Navy’s Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) Shruti, Yard 3037, was launched at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, on August 11, 2026.
• The vessel was launched by Manika Sadhu in the presence of Vice Admiral Sanjay Sadhu. Shruti is part of India’s 11-ship NGOPV programme, with ships being constructed at GRSE and Goa Shipyard Limited.
• These indigenously designed vessels are intended for maritime surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and anti-piracy operations.
• The launch supports India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and indigenous defence shipbuilding objectives.

7. Russia Appoints D.Y. Chandrachud in Ukraine Arbitration

• Former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud has been appointed by Russia as its arbitrator in an international investment dispute involving Ukraine’s state-owned Oschadbank.
• The bank initiated proceedings against Russia over losses to its assets in Ukrainian territories occupied and annexed by Russia.
• Chandrachud will serve on a three-member arbitral tribunal, alongside Costa Rican arbitrator Dyalá Jiménez, who presides, and Stavros Brekoulakis, appointed by Oschadbank.
• The case arises under the 1998 Ukraine-Russia Bilateral Investment Treaty.
• The appointment is notable because Chandrachud had previously declined approaches from Russia for other arbitration proceedings.

8. India’s Para-Cyclists Win 12 Medals in Denmark

• Indian para-cyclists produced an outstanding performance at the UCI Parasport Denmark Grand Prix in Odense, winning 12 medals — two gold, five silver and five bronze.
• Paralympian Arshad Shaikh led India’s medal tally with six medals, including two gold, three silver and one bronze.

9. Sangeet Natak Akademi Announces 2024 and 2025 Awards

• The Sangeet Natak Akademi announced honours for the years 2024 and 2025, recognising leading contributors to India’s performing arts.
• The General Council selected seven Akademi Fellows (Akademi Ratna) and 108 artists for the Akademi Awards, covering music, dance, theatre, traditional and tribal arts, puppetry and related fields.
• Another 106 young artists were selected for the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar.
• President Droupadi Murmu presented the Fellowships and Awards to 115 artists at a ceremony in New Delhi on August 13.

10. Skyroot Signs Multi-Launch Deal After Vikram-1 Success

• Indian private space company Skyroot Aerospace has secured a major commercial contract following the successful orbital debut of its Vikram-1 rocket.
• Skyroot signed a multi-launch agreement with Kerala-based space technology company HEX20 for three dedicated Vikram-series launches, beginning in the fourth quarter of 2027.
• The missions will support HEX20’s Earth-observation constellation, in-orbit payload demonstrations and rideshare opportunities.
• The agreement follows Skyroot’s successful July 18, 2026 Vikram-1 mission, which reached orbit on its maiden attempt.
• The deal demonstrates growing commercial confidence in India’s private space-launch industry and strengthens Skyroot’s position in the emerging global launch market.

11. NASA Invites ISRO for Moon Base Programme

• NASA has invited ISRO to participate in its Moon Base programme, marking a major expansion of India-US space cooperation.
• The invitation was discussed during the 9th India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group meeting held in Bengaluru on August 5–6, 2026.
• The cooperation builds on India’s participation in the Artemis Accords, which it joined in 2023, and the successful NASA-ISRO NISAR mission.
• Both sides discussed future lunar missions, scientific data sharing and human-spaceflight technologies.
• The proposed cooperation could give India a greater role in developing sustainable lunar infrastructure.

12. Bashar al-Assad Sentenced to Death in Syria

• A Syrian court has sentenced former President Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia for crimes including premeditated murder, torture, arbitrary detention and crimes against humanity during Syria’s nearly 14-year civil war.
• His brother Maher al-Assad and cousin Atef Najib were also sentenced to death.
• Assad was overthrown in December 2024 and subsequently fled to Russia, where he received asylum.
• The verdict represents the first major Syrian court conviction against Assad following the collapse of his regime.
• Since the sentences were delivered in absentia, their immediate enforcement remains unlikely while Assad remains in Russia.

13. China’s Long March 7A Rocket Explodes After Launch

• China’s Long March 7A rocket failed shortly after launch from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan on August 10, 2026.
• The rocket was carrying the ChinaSat-4B communications satellite toward a high orbit when an in-flight anomaly occurred.
• Video footage showed the rocket breaking apart roughly 80 seconds after liftoff.
• China subsequently confirmed the launch failure and began investigating the cause.
• The satellite did not reach orbit. It was only the second failure of the Long March 7A since its debut in 2020, following more than a dozen successful missions.
• The incident represents a setback for China’s high-orbit satellite-launch programme.

14. Annapurni Subramaniam Wins COSPAR Vikram Sarabhai Medal 2026

• Prof. Annapurni Subramaniam, Director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), has been awarded the prestigious COSPAR Vikram Sarabhai Medal for 2026.
• She becomes the first Indian woman to receive the honour.
• The medal, jointly associated with ISRO and the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR), recognises outstanding contributions to space research in developing countries.
• Subramaniam has made significant contributions to astronomy, particularly studies of star clusters, stellar evolution, galaxy formation and ultraviolet astronomy.
• She also played a major role in India’s ultraviolet space-observation programme and became the first woman director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics.

15. VinSpace Signs SpaceX Launch Deal for 2027

• Vietnamese space company VinSpace has signed a satellite launch contract with SpaceX, marking an important milestone for Vietnam’s emerging commercial space industry.
• Under the agreement announced on August 11, 2026, VinSpace satellites will be launched aboard a SpaceX Transporter rideshare mission in 2027.
• The rideshare model allows multiple customers to share launch capacity, reducing costs for smaller satellite operators.
• VinSpace will be responsible for developing, manufacturing and operating its satellites in orbit.
• The missions are intended to demonstrate technologies developed by the company and build its satellite-engineering capabilities.

16. Gujarat Launches ₹2.94 Crore Plastic Waste Project at Nalsarovar

• The Gujarat Forest Department has launched a ₹2.94-crore Plastic Waste Management Project around the Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, a Ramsar-designated wetland.
• The initiative aims to reduce plastic pollution while creating livelihood opportunities for local communities.
• Under the project, plastic waste collected by villagers will be purchased, segregated, transported to a collection centre and processed.
• The project has been approved under the Project for Eco-Restoration in Gujarat (PERG) with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
• A dedicated plastic waste collection centre has been established at Kayla village. The programme combines environmental conservation with community participation and local economic opportunities.

17. V.O.C. Port Becomes India’s First Scope-2 Emission-Free Major Port

• V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port) in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, has become India’s first major port recognised as Scope-2 Emission Free.
• The recognition reflects the port’s efforts to eliminate indirect greenhouse-gas emissions associated with purchased electricity by using renewable energy.
• VOC Port has also received ISO 50001:2018 certification for its Energy Management System.

18. Russia Buys Gasoline from India for First Time

19. Scientists Discover Unusual Ozone Layer Above North Bay of Bengal

• Scientists have detected an unusually high concentration of ozone in the upper atmosphere over the North Bay of Bengal.
• The discovery is helping researchers understand how atmospheric circulation transports ozone through the stratosphere.
• Scientists from several Indian institutions, including the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), used atmospheric radars, weather balloons, satellites and advanced atmospheric models to study ozone movement.
• Normally, the highest concentration of ozone occurs around 25–30 km above Earth’s surface.
• Since ozone absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation, understanding its distribution is crucial for atmospheric science and climate research, particularly over the Indian region.

20. Indian Institutions Rise to 52 in QS Rankings

• India’s presence in the QS World University Rankings has expanded significantly, with 52 Indian higher-education institutions appearing in the 2027 edition, compared with only 11 in 2015 when the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was launched.
• India is now the fifth-most represented higher-education system globally in the QS rankings. IIT Delhi emerged as India’s highest-ranked institution at 118th globally, matching India’s best-ever position.
• The growth reflects improvements in research output, academic reputation and international visibility.
