1. Deepti Gaur Mukerjee Appointed Higher Education Secretary

• Senior 1993-batch IAS officer Deepti Gaur Mukerjee has been appointed Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education.
• She succeeds Vineet Joshi, who was shifted to the Ministry of Panchayati Raj.
• Mukerjee, from the Madhya Pradesh cadre, was earlier Secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and had also served as CEO of the National Health Authority.
• She holds an MA in Economics from JNU and an MSc in Public Management and Governance from the London School of Economics.
• Her appointment comes at an important time as the government implements NEP 2020 and reforms higher education and examination systems.

2. PM Launches Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Abhiyan

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan on 2 August 2026, beginning a nationwide 100-week campaign against substance abuse.
• More than one crore young people from over 28,000 locations joined the launch. The campaign will organise activities every Sunday, including sports events, walkathons, meditation, cultural programmes, awareness drives, street plays and discussions.
• Educational institutions, MY Bharat volunteers, NSS, youth clubs, NGOs and spiritual organisations are participating. The initiative aims to build a healthy, confident and drug-free younger generation and contribute to the vision of a Drug-Free India by 2047.

3. Colombia Declares National Emergency After Major Earthquake

• Colombia declared an Economic, Social and Ecological Emergency following the 7.4-magnitude earthquake of 10 August 2026. President Abelardo de la Espriella signed Decree 1261, with the emergency initially valid for 30 days.
• The earthquake was centred near San José del Palmar in Chocó and affected infrastructure, homes, schools, health facilities, roads and public services across 14 departments.
• The emergency declaration enables the government to take extraordinary measures for relief, reconstruction and recovery. Thousands of families were affected, although the country’s coffee sector largely avoided catastrophic production losses.
• The disaster has created a major reconstruction and humanitarian challenge.

4. Jammu & Kashmir to Host Irani Cup in Srinagar

• Srinagar’s Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium is set to host the Irani Cup 2026 from 1–5 October, marking a major milestone for cricket in Jammu & Kashmir. The match will feature Jammu & Kashmir against the Rest of India (RoI).
• The BCCI has already inspected the stadium and advised the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association on infrastructure upgrades required for the nationally televised fixture.
• Hosting the prestigious Irani Cup in Srinagar is significant because the tournament traditionally features India’s domestic champions against the Rest of India.
• The event is expected to provide a major boost to cricket infrastructure and sports tourism in Jammu & Kashmir.

5. Uttar Pradesh Becomes India’s Largest Milk-Producing State

• Uttar Pradesh continues to hold the position of India’s largest milk-producing state, contributing the biggest share of the country’s milk output. India’s dairy sector has expanded significantly over the past decade, helping the country retain its position as the world’s largest milk producer.
• Uttar Pradesh’s large cattle and buffalo population, extensive dairy farming network and cooperative infrastructure have supported its leading position. Dairy production is particularly important for rural livelihoods because it provides farmers with regular income in addition to agriculture.
• The state’s dominance also reflects the continuing impact of India’s White Revolution and Operation Flood, which transformed the country’s dairy economy.

6. Gujarat’s Pithora Painting Receives GI Tag

• The traditional Pithora painting of Gujarat has received renewed recognition as a Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged handicraft associated with the tribal communities of Chhota Udepur.
• Pithora is a sacred ritual wall art traditionally created by Rathwa, Bhil, Bhilala and Nayaka communities.
• Artists known as Lakharas use natural colours derived from leaves, flowers, minerals and other materials. Horses are among the most prominent motifs, representing deities, ancestors and spiritual elements.
• The GI protection helps safeguard the art’s regional identity and traditional techniques while supporting tribal artisans and cultural preservation.
• Important correction: the official GI Registry records Pithora as registered in 2021, rather than receiving its first GI registration in 2026.

7. Karnataka Launches Sandhya Kiran Cashless Healthcare Cover

• The Karnataka Cabinet approved the Sandhya Kiran contributory cashless healthcare scheme for state government pensioners below 70 years, family pensioners and eligible dependants.
• The scheme provides cashless medical treatment through designated hospitals and is intended to reduce the financial burden on retired government employees.
• Eligible families can receive annual medical coverage of up to ₹5 lakh on a floater basis, covering secondary, tertiary and emergency treatment.
• The initiative is aimed at improving healthcare security for pensioners and their families while reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses. It represents Karnataka’s effort to strengthen social-security measures for retired government personnel.

8. Parliamentary Panel Backs National Pine Needle Policy

• A Parliamentary standing committee has recommended a National Pine-Needle Utilisation Policy to address the growing problem of forest fires in the Himalayan region.
• Pine needles accumulate on forest floors and can become highly combustible during dry periods. The proposed framework aims to convert this biomass into useful products while creating employment and income opportunities for rural communities.
• The committee has also recommended a National or Regional Pine Needle Management Board, identification of fire-prone zones and financial incentives for collecting dry pine needles.
• A suggested procurement price of around ₹3–4 per kg could encourage local collection. The policy could simultaneously improve forest-fire prevention and rural livelihoods.

9. Uttar Pradesh’s Parichha Weir Gets ICID Heritage Recognition

• The historic Parichha Weir in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, has been selected by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) as a World Heritage Irrigation Structure (WHIS).
• Built across the Betwa River, the approximately 140-year-old structure stretches about 1,174 metres. The recognition acknowledges its historical and engineering importance as an irrigation system.
• The honour is significant because the structure continues to represent India’s long tradition of water-resource management and irrigation engineering.
• The formal recognition is scheduled to be presented in France during the 26th ICID International Congress in October 2026.

10. Pakistan’s First Lunar Rover Named Jinnah-1

• Pakistan’s space agency SUPARCO has officially named the country’s first lunar rover Jinnah-1, after founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The name was selected through a nationwide competition that received more than 4,000 entries.
• Seven participants proposed the name, and 17-year-old Tayyab Karim Khan from Bahawalnagar was selected through a ballot. The rover is scheduled to travel to the Moon in 2029 aboard China’s Chang’e-8 mission.
• It is expected to conduct scientific research near the lunar South Pole, including studies of the lunar environment and terrain. The mission represents Pakistan’s growing participation in international lunar exploration.

11. L&T Secures AI Data Centre Order Worth Up to ₹15,000 Crore

• Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a major AI infrastructure order from US-based Together AI, valued between ₹10,000 crore and ₹15,000 crore. The project will create a large-scale AI Factory at L&T’s Chennai data-centre campus through its AI infrastructure operations.
• The facility is planned to deploy around 10,000 NVIDIA B300 GPUs, making it one of India’s largest single-cluster AI computing installations. It will support AI training, inference and fine-tuning workloads.
• The project marks L&T’s significant entry into the AI Factory business and highlights India’s growing role in high-performance computing and AI infrastructure.

12. Gaj Gaurav Awards 2026 Conferred for Elephant Conservation

• The Gaj Gaurav Awards 2026 were presented during India’s World Elephant Day 2026 celebrations in Visakhapatnam. The awards recognise frontline contributions to Asian elephant conservation and management.
• Seven mahouts from Jaldapara National Park, West Bengal, were honoured for courage during flood-rescue operations and elephant protection.
• Two caregivers from Namdapha National Park and Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh, were recognised for elephant welfare and management.
• The event also marked the release of “30 Giant Steps,” highlighting 30 major Project Elephant achievements from 2020–2026. Project Elephant was launched in 1992 to protect elephants, habitats and corridors and address human-elephant conflict.

13. MMDR Amendment Bill, 2026 Gets Parliament Approval

• The Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 was passed by both Houses of Parliament on 13 August 2026. The legislation amends the MMDR Act, 1957, with the government stating that its objective is to provide greater stability, certainty and predictability to the major-minerals sector.
• The government has clarified that the amendment does not take away states’ rights over land and minerals or mineral taxation.
• Around 90% of mining-related taxes and statutory payments currently accrue to states, and this arrangement will continue. The reforms are intended to encourage investment and strengthen India’s mineral-development framework.

14. DigiLocker Crosses 72 Crore Users; UMANG Reaches 11 Crore

• India’s digital public-service platforms have achieved major milestones. As of 31 July 2026, DigiLocker had more than 72.43 crore registered users, while UMANG had over 11.66 crore registered users.
• DigiLocker provides digital access to government-issued documents, while UMANG integrates numerous government services through a single digital platform.
• UMANG offered around 2,575 services, while DigiLocker hosted 5,437 document types/services. DigiLocker recorded approximately 72.86 crore document-access transactions over the previous three years, while UMANG recorded around 798 crore transactions.
• The growth demonstrates the scale of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and paperless governance ecosystem.

15. 8th BRICS Oceanic-Polar Science and Technology Meet Begins in Goa

• The 8th BRICS Working Group Meeting on Oceanic and Polar Science and Technology (OPST) was held in Goa during India’s BRICS Presidency in 2026.
• Hosted by the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the meeting brought together scientists and officials from BRICS member countries.
• Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in marine science, polar research, climate studies and ocean technology. Delegates also worked on a proposed five-year roadmap for scientific collaboration.
• The meeting is important for India because ocean and polar research contributes to climate monitoring, resource assessment, maritime security and understanding global environmental changes.

16. India and Malaysia Commence Exercise Udara Shakti 2026

• The Indian Air Force (IAF) participated in Exercise Udara Shakti 2026 with the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) in Malaysia.
• The bilateral air exercise focuses on improving tactical interoperability, aerial combat skills, joint mission planning and operational coordination.
• India’s participation followed Exercise Pitch Black 2026 in Australia, with the IAF contingent moving directly to Subang, Malaysia.
• The exercise provides both air forces an opportunity to conduct complex flying operations and exchange operational experience.
• The engagement strengthens India-Malaysia defence relations and supports India’s wider strategic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.

17. Karnataka Bans Tobacco and Nicotine Products

• Karnataka has imposed a one-year ban on the manufacture, storage, transportation, distribution and sale of specified products containing tobacco and/or nicotine, including gutkha and pan masala.
• The notification was issued under Section 30(2)(a) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, read with Regulation 2.3.4 of the relevant regulations.
• The Food Safety Department has launched special inspections and enforcement operations across the state. The government says the measure is intended to protect public health and curb addiction.
• Important clarification: reports describing this as a blanket ban on every tobacco product, including cigarettes, are misleading; the notification specifically targets prohibited tobacco/nicotine-containing products covered by the food-safety regulations.

18. India Plans ₹1 Lakh Crore Tender for 60 Transport Aircraft

• The Ministry of Defence has issued a tender for around 60 Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) for the Indian Air Force, with the programme estimated at nearly ₹1 lakh crore.
• The acquisition is designed primarily to modernise the IAF’s ageing transport fleet, including replacing older An-32 aircraft. Indian companies are expected to play the lead role in partnership with global aerospace manufacturers.
• Potential contenders include Lockheed Martin’s C-130J and Embraer’s C-390 Millennium, through Indian partnerships.
• About 20% of aircraft may be delivered in fly-away condition, while most would be manufactured in India with substantial indigenous content, supporting Make in India.

19. Government Outlines Roadmap for Self-Reliant Nuclear Energy

• The government has presented a roadmap for building a self-reliant and globally competitive nuclear-energy ecosystem.
• India aims to reach 100 GWe of nuclear capacity by 2047, with emphasis on indigenous reactors, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), thorium utilisation, domestic manufacturing and private-sector participation.
• At least five indigenous SMRs are targeted by 2033. The strategy continues India’s three-stage nuclear programme, including long-term utilisation of India’s substantial thorium resources.
• The government is also focusing on large indigenous 700-MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) and advanced reactor technologies. The roadmap is intended to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on imported nuclear technologies.

20. Delhi Master Plan 2047 Approved/Unveiled

• The Delhi Master Plan 2047 (MPD-2047) has been unveiled as a long-term roadmap for transforming Delhi into an inclusive, sustainable, resilient and globally competitive capital.
• The plan envisages approximately 40 lakh new affordable housing units to meet future demand. It combines area-based redevelopment of existing urban areas with infrastructure-led development of greenfield zones.
• Around 200 sq km is planned for urban expansion, potentially creating about 12 lakh homes and a 600-km road network.
• The plan also promotes transit-oriented development, land pooling, redevelopment of unauthorised colonies, affordable housing along metro corridors and Yamuna/environmental improvement.

21. Gujarat to Get Asia’s First Desert-Themed Night Safari

• Deesa in Banaskantha district, Gujarat, is set to become home to Asia’s first desert-themed drive-through night safari and zoological park. The project has received approval from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA).
• It is designed around desert ecosystems and will offer visitors a specialised nocturnal wildlife experience. The project aims to combine tourism with awareness and conservation of desert biodiversity.
• The development is expected to strengthen Gujarat’s wildlife-tourism infrastructure and create a distinctive attraction in the state’s northern region.
• The desert-themed concept is particularly significant because it focuses attention on species and ecosystems adapted to arid environments rather than conventional forest-based safari models.

22. Cabinet Approves Jammu & Kashmir High Court Bench in Ladakh

• The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved establishment of a bench of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court in Ladakh.
• The decision is intended to improve access to justice for residents of the Union Territory and reduce the need to travel long distances for judicial proceedings.
• The move was announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 20 August 2026. Alongside the judicial decision, the Cabinet approved infrastructure projects involving rail and highways worth about ₹13,041 crore.
• The High Court bench is expected to strengthen judicial accessibility and institutional governance in Ladakh following its transition to Union Territory status.

23. 16-Year-Old Lakshmanan Meyyappan Becomes Youngest Chartered Accountant

• Lakshmanan Meyyappan, aged just 16, has gained international recognition as the world’s youngest Chartered Accountant. His remarkable academic journey accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he used the lockdown period to focus intensely on professional studies.
• He completed the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) qualification at the age of 15, setting a reported world record. He is now pursuing professional opportunities and gaining experience in the financial sector in Dubai.
• His achievement has attracted attention because of the exceptionally young age at which he completed a rigorous international accountancy qualification, highlighting the possibilities of accelerated learning and professional education.

24. NSG Launches First Mahila Commando Conversion Course

• The National Security Guard (NSG) has launched its first Mahila Commando Conversion Course (MCCC) at its Training Academy in Manesar, Haryana.
• The 12-week programme is designed for women personnel from State Police Forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). Training includes intensive physical conditioning, weapons handling, marksmanship, tactical intervention, hostage rescue and other counter-terrorism skills.
• The course runs through November 2026. After completing the programme, the trained women are expected to return to their parent organisations and use their specialised skills there.
• The initiative aims to increase women’s participation in specialised counter-terrorism roles and create a larger pool of trained women commandos.

25. ISRO Chief V. Narayanan Announces India’s Space Station Goal

• ISRO Chairman Dr V. Narayanan has reiterated India’s goal of establishing its own space station, the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), by 2035.
• Speaking during the third National Space Day celebrations in Ahmedabad, he said the first module has already been approved.
• India is simultaneously progressing with the Gaganyaan human-spaceflight programme, with the first uncrewed mission targeted for 2026.
• Narayanan has also said India plans to place at least 300 satellites into orbit over the next five to six years.
• The space-station programme represents India’s transition from individual missions toward sustained human activity in space and a larger role in the global space ecosystem.
