  • India’s Chief Justice, Surya Kant, announced he would set up a special committee, led by Supreme Court Justice Aravind Kumar.
  • This committee will draw up a plan for updating courts nationwide and get the government to set aside 40 to 50 thousand crore rupees for it.
  • The ‘Judicial Infrastructure Advisory Committee‘ will tackle problems with court buildings and facilities by getting substantial financial help from the government.
  • Besides Justice Kumar, the committee will include Justices Debangsu Basak from the Calcutta High Court, Ashwani Kumar Mishra from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and Somasekhar Sundaresan from the Bombay High Court.
  • The head of the Central Public Works Department and the Supreme Court’s secretary general will also be on the panel.
  • The committee needs to give its detailed findings and how much money they’ll need to Sanjeev Sanyal, who is part of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, by August 31st this year.
  • They will concentrate on seven main areas, such as figuring out what problems are holding the system back, making things better for people involved in cases and their lawyers, and bringing in advanced technology to speed up how cases are handled.
  • The group will also pay attention to the e-courts project, which aims to close the gap in digital access, and building modern court complexes that are fit for the 21st century.
