The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to conduct Dronathon-2026, a major three-day demonstration and evaluation event aimed at showcasing India’s emerging capabilities in Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (CUAS).
The event will take place at the Pokhran Range in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, from September 14 to 16, 2026. It will bring together domestic defence manufacturers, start-ups, technology developers and innovators to demonstrate advanced unmanned and counter-drone technologies.
Unlike a conventional defence exhibition, Dronathon-2026 will include static displays as well as live demonstrations, allowing stakeholders to assess emerging technologies under operationally relevant conditions.
The Ministry of Defence says the event will help identify contemporary solutions and evaluate their combat effectiveness.
What Is Dronathon 2026?
- Dronathon-2026 is an IAF initiative designed to provide domestic manufacturers and innovators with a platform to demonstrate advancements in unmanned and counter-unmanned aerial technologies.
- The event reflects the growing importance of drones in modern military operations, where unmanned systems can support surveillance, reconnaissance, intelligence gathering and other operational roles.
- At the same time, the rapid proliferation of drones has increased the need for technologies capable of detecting and countering hostile unmanned systems.
- Therefore, Dronathon-2026 will examine both sides of the equation—drone capabilities and counter-drone capabilities.

Key Technologies to Watch at Dronathon 2026
The IAF has identified several technology areas for the event.
1. Surveillance and Reconnaissance Drones
- Surveillance and reconnaissance are among the most important military applications of unmanned aerial systems.
- Drones can provide aerial observation and intelligence support while reducing the need to expose personnel to certain operational risks.
- Dronathon-2026 will provide an opportunity to examine emerging capabilities in this area.
2. Autonomous Operations
- Another major focus will be autonomous operations.
- Advances in artificial intelligence, sensors, navigation and onboard computing are increasingly allowing unmanned platforms to perform missions with greater levels of autonomy.
- The event will allow defence stakeholders to observe how emerging autonomous technologies could contribute to future military operations.
3. Swarm Technology
- Swarm technology is one of the most closely watched areas of modern drone warfare.
- Instead of relying on a single unmanned aircraft, swarm concepts involve multiple platforms operating in a coordinated manner.
- The IAF has specifically identified swarm technologies as one of the key focus areas of Dronathon-2026.
4. Electronic Warfare
- Electronic warfare is another important component of the event.
- Modern military operations increasingly depend on the electromagnetic spectrum for communications, sensing and other functions.
- Dronathon-2026 will therefore examine technologies relevant to operating unmanned systems in an increasingly complex electronic environment.
What Are Counter-Drone Systems?
- While drones provide significant military advantages, they can also create new security challenges.
- This has resulted in growing interest in Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (CUAS).
- Counter-drone systems are broadly designed to identify and respond to unauthorised or hostile unmanned aircraft.
- Dronathon-2026 will allow domestic manufacturers and innovators to demonstrate their CUAS capabilities alongside conventional unmanned systems.
Dronathon 2026 and the Future of Indian Air Power
Traditional air power has historically centred on fighter aircraft, transport aircraft, helicopters and other crewed platforms.
The growing use of unmanned systems is changing that equation.
Future air operations could increasingly involve a combination of:
- Crewed aircraft
- Unmanned aerial systems
- Autonomous platforms
- Swarm technologies
- Intelligence and surveillance systems
- Counter-drone networks
- Electronic warfare capabilities
Dronathon-2026 is significant because it brings several of these emerging technology areas into a single operational demonstration environment.
