India’s weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu has won the country’s first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after a dominant performance in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event. The 31-year-old lifted a record-breaking total of 190 kilograms, comprising 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, setting new Commonwealth Games records in both lifts.
With this victory, Mirabai secured her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, having previously won gold in Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022. Her latest triumph further cements her status as one of India’s greatest weightlifters.
President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mirabai Chanu on her historic achievement.
The President praised her exceptional grit, determination, and excellence. The Vice President lauded her dedication, resilience, and consistent performances, while the Prime Minister described the victory as another glorious chapter in Indian weightlifting, calling her an inspiration for millions and wishing her continued success.
India also added two silver medals in weightlifting.
Chanambam Rishikanta Singh won silver in the men’s 60kg category with a total lift of 264 kilograms. He equalled the Commonwealth Games snatch record by lifting 121kg before adding 143kg in the clean and jerk.
In the men’s 65kg category, Raja Muthupandi claimed silver with a combined lift of 286 kilograms, including 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk. Malaysia’s Muhamad Aznil Bin Bidin won the gold medal with a Games record total of 299 kilograms.
India also enjoyed success in boxing. Jadumani Singh advanced to the men’s 55kg quarter-finals after defeating Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman, while Preeti Pawar progressed to the women’s 54kg quarter-finals by beating Deborah Mtenje of Malawi.
India’s medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 now stands at four medals:

India had opened its medal account earlier when para-powerlifter Jhandu Kumar won a bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight event on the opening day of the Games.
