Indian athletes and team officials participating in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2026 will wear specially designed jute-viscose blended apparel. Developed by the National Jute Board (NJB) under the Ministry of Textiles, the eco-friendly apparel will debut at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, scheduled from July 23 to August 2, 2026.

First-Ever Jute-Based Apparel at an International Multi-Sport Event

This is the first time jute-based apparel will be worn by athletes at a major international multi-sport event. The initiative showcases India’s innovation in natural fibres while promoting biodegradable, environmentally friendly textiles on the global stage. The Ministry of Textiles said the fabric is made from a 100% biodegradable jute-viscose blend, demonstrating the potential of sustainable textiles in sportswear.

Official Kit Unveiled in New Delhi:

The official CWG 2026 kit was unveiled during the Kit Unveiling and Send-off Ceremony in New Delhi. The event was attended by:

  • Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya
  • Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh
  • Minister of State Raksha Khadse
  • IOA President P. T. Usha

The ceremony highlighted India’s commitment to combining sports excellence with sustainable innovation.

Designed by NIFT, Developed with Industry Support

The innovative fabric was developed by the National Jute Board with support from Gloster Jute Mills, Kolkata. The apparel was designed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), New Delhi, ensuring comfort, durability, and modern styling suitable for international athletes.

Promoting Make in India and Green Textiles

Officials said the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of promoting Make in India products and expanding value-added applications of jute. Beyond sports, the project is expected to:

  • Promote India’s jute industry globally
  • Create new opportunities for jute farmers
  • Encourage sustainable textile manufacturing
  • Expand international demand for eco-friendly fabrics

The National Jute Board believes the move will strengthen India’s Jute Diversification Programme while positioning natural fibres as environmentally responsible alternatives in the global textile market.

India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 Contingent

India will send a contingent of 124 members, including:

  • 78 male athletes
  • 46 female athletes

Athletes from 72 Commonwealth nations will compete in the Glasgow Games.
