DRDO and Indian Air Force successfully test the indigenous TARA glide weapon system during an aerial trial.DRDO and the Indian Air Force conducted a successful test of the indigenous TARA glide weapon system, boosting India’s defence capabilities and self-reliance.

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) have successfully conducted the maiden flight trial of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) weapon system.

The test was carried out off the coast of Odisha on May 7, 2026.

What is the TARA Weapon System?

  • Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) is a modular range-extension glide weapon developed indigenously by India.
  • It is designed to convert conventional unguided warheads into precision-guided weapons capable of accurately striking ground-based targets.
  • The system is considered India’s first indigenous glide weapon kit developed for this purpose.

Developed by DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat

The TARA system has been designed and developed by Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, along with several other DRDO laboratories.

The weapon system has been created to improve:

  • Accuracy of low-cost weapons
  • Range augmentation capability
  • Precision strike capability
  • Lethality against ground targets

The project aims to provide affordable and effective precision-guided solutions for the armed forces.

Focus on Low-Cost Precision Warfare

  • According to DRDO, TARA is the first glide weapon system in India to use advanced low-cost technologies for precision targeting.
  • The modular kit can be attached to existing unguided warheads, significantly enhancing their operational effectiveness while reducing overall costs.
  • The development aligns with modern warfare requirements, where precision-guided munitions play a crucial role in minimizing collateral damage and improving strike accuracy.

Indigenous Production Already Underway

  • The development of TARA has been undertaken in collaboration with Development-cum-Production Partners (DcPPs) and several Indian industries.
  • Production activities for the system have already started, reflecting India’s growing defence manufacturing ecosystem under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
  • The project highlights increasing participation of Indian private industry in advanced defence technologies.

Boost to India’s Indigenous Defence Capability

The successful testing of TARA marks another important milestone in India’s growing indigenous defence technology programme.

The development of precision-guided glide weapon systems strengthens India’s capability in:

  • Advanced aerial warfare
  • Precision strike operations
  • Indigenous weapons manufacturing
  • Defence self-reliance

The achievement further supports India’s long-term goal of becoming a major defence technology and manufacturing hub.
