Ola Electric has announced that its mass-market electric scooter, Ola S1 X+ 5.2 kWh, has received approval from the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT).

ICAT is a government-certified testing agency operating under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR).

The approval marks an important milestone for the company as it prepares to expand its electric vehicle offerings for the mass market.

Key Features of the Ola S1 X+ Scooter

The S1 X+ scooter comes equipped with:

  • An 11 kW mid-drive motor
  • Integrated MCU (Microcontroller Unit)
  • Top speed of up to 125 km/h
  • Claimed IDC range of 320 km

The scooter is powered by Ola Electric’s in-house developed 4680 Bharat Cell technology.

The company says the battery has been specifically designed for long-range electric vehicles and improved performance efficiency.

What is the 4680 Bharat Cell?

The 4680 Bharat Cell is a lithium-ion battery cell developed internally by Ola Electric as part of its efforts to localize EV technology in India.

The technology aims to improve:

  • Energy density
  • Driving range
  • Battery efficiency
  • Cost optimization for EV manufacturing

The certification allows the company to deploy this technology at scale in the mass-market segment.

Tests Conducted by ICAT

Before granting certification, ICAT conducted multiple mandatory tests under CMVR regulations for electric vehicles.

The testing process included:

  • Crash safety testing
  • Battery safety evaluations
  • Range and acceleration testing
  • Top-speed verification
  • Energy efficiency assessment
  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing

EMC testing evaluates whether the vehicle can withstand electromagnetic interference from external sources without affecting performance.

Expanding Electric Mobility in India

The approval is expected to help Ola Electric strengthen its position in India’s growing electric two-wheeler market.

With rising demand for affordable electric mobility solutions, the company aims to make advanced EV technology accessible to a larger segment of consumers.
