Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia has announced the launch of a drone-based mail transmission service in Himachal Pradesh.
The new service has been introduced between the Mandi Head Post Office and the Rehardhar Branch Post Office, significantly reducing delivery time and improving connectivity in remote areas.
The initiative follows feedback received by the Minister during interactions with Gramin Dak Sevaks and Postal Assistants, who highlighted the challenges of delivering mail in difficult mountainous terrain.
Traditional transportation methods often require more than two hours to cover the approximately 12-kilometre route between Mandi and Rehardhar.
With the introduction of drone technology, the same journey can now be completed in about seven minutes.
This dramatic reduction in transit time is expected to improve the efficiency of postal services and ensure faster delivery of important documents, parcels, and government communications.
The Department of Posts plans to expand drone-based mail transmission to around 150 identified routes across Himachal Pradesh and Assam over the next two to three months. The expansion aims to strengthen connectivity in remote regions where geographical challenges often delay traditional transportation.
