Amarendu Prakash, Chairman and Managing Director of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has stepped down from his position with effect from April 1, 2026, following approval from the Ministry of Steel.

His resignation marks the end of his tenure that began on May 31, 2023, when he took charge as the head of India’s largest public-sector steel producer.

Interim Leadership Arrangement

In the meantime, Krishna Kumar Singh, Director (Personnel) at SAIL, has been assigned additional charge as Chairman and Managing Director.

  • Tenure: April 2 to July 1, 2026
  • Or until a new CMD is appointed or further orders are issued

This arrangement ensures continuity in leadership during the transition period.

Resignation and Official Approval

According to a regulatory filing with the BSE, Amarendu Prakash had submitted his resignation earlier on January 2, 2026.

The filing confirmed that:

  • The competent authority approved his resignation
  • He officially ceased to be a member of the SAIL Board from April 1, 2026

In his resignation letter, Prakash expressed his commitment to a smooth and orderly transition, requesting an early release from duties.

Race for New CMD Begins

Meanwhile, the selection process for a new Chairman is underway.

The government’s head-hunting body, Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB), has recommended:

  • Ashok Kumar Panda, currently Director (Finance) at SAIL

He was among 10 shortlisted candidates interviewed for the top position.
