The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has approved a structured player contract system starting from the 2026–27 season. This makes MCA the first state cricket body in India to implement annual contracts for domestic players.
Player Contract Structure:
Players will be categorized into three grades:
- Grade A: ₹12–20 lakh
- Grade B: ₹8–12 lakh
- Grade C: ₹8 lakh
This system ensures financial stability for players who are not part of IPL or international cricket.
Objective of the Initiative:
- Provide stable income to domestic players
- Reward consistent performers
- Encourage participation in long-format cricket
- Strengthen grassroots cricket ecosystem
Why This Move Matters
This initiative is a game-changer for domestic cricket:
- Reduces financial uncertainty
- Encourages players to focus on Ranji Trophy & longer formats
- Sets a model for other state associations and possibly Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Conclusion:
The MCA’s player contract model is a progressive reform that prioritizes player welfare and long-term sustainability. If adopted nationwide, it could transform Indian domestic cricket.
