Pixxel has partnered with Sarvam AI to develop India’s first orbital data centre satellite, named “Pathfinder.”
Expected to be launched by Q4 2026, this mission could enable the first-ever Indian AI model trained directly in space.
What is the Pathfinder Satellite?
- A ~200 kg satellite designed as a space-based data centre
- Equipped with high-performance GPUs (similar to ground AI data centres)
- Will perform AI training and inference in orbit
- Will also carry a hyperspectral imaging camera for Earth observation
Unlike traditional satellites (low-power processors), Pathfinder will use advanced computing hardware to process data in real time.
Why Train AI in Space?
Key Advantages:
- Abundant solar energy → reduces power constraints
- Closer to data source → faster processing of satellite data
- Real-time insights → no need to send raw data back to Earth
- Data sovereignty → reduces reliance on foreign cloud infrastructure
This aligns with India’s push for indigenous AI capabilities.
Global Context: Rise of Space-Based Computing
The idea of orbital data centres is gaining traction globally:
- SpaceX plans large-scale satellite infrastructure
- Google and Meta are exploring space-linked computing solutions
- Even ISRO is working on next-gen satellites with onboard processing
Reason:
- Data centre energy demand is exploding
- Land-based infrastructure faces power, cost, and environmental constraints
Challenges & Concerns
Despite its promise, orbital data centres face serious hurdles:
- High launch costs (must reduce significantly)
- Maintenance issues (repairing hardware in space is difficult)
- Thermal and power management challenges
- Questions over commercial viability
Many experts still consider the concept experimental.
Potential Applications
The Pathfinder mission could transform multiple sectors:
- Agriculture monitoring
- Disaster management (floods, fires)
- Environmental tracking
- Infrastructure planning
- Strategic & defence applications
Real-time processing = faster decision-making
