In a major boost to India’s sporting profile, the country has been awarded the hosting rights for the World Indoor Athletics Championships 2028, which will be held in Bhubaneswar.
The decision was taken during the council meeting of World Athletics in Toruń, a day before the start of the 2025 edition of the championships.
Why Bhubaneswar?
- The choice of Bhubaneswar as the host city is backed by its world-class sports infrastructure, particularly the facilities at the Kalinga Stadium Complex.
- Earlier this year, a delegation from World Athletics visited the venue to assess its readiness.
- The modern indoor facilities and the city’s proven track record in hosting international sporting events played a key role in securing the bid.
India’s Growing Sporting Reputation
India’s successful bid reflects the country’s increasing capability to host global sporting events. Over the years, Bhubaneswar has developed into a major sports hub, especially for athletics and hockey.
The awarding of the 2028 championships is expected to:
-
Boost India’s global sports image
-
Inspire young athletes across the country
-
Strengthen sports infrastructure and training ecosystem
A Milestone for Indian Athletics
