Cabinet approves ₹1570 crore ship repair facility at Vadinar GujaratThe Union Cabinet has approved a ₹1,570 crore ship repair facility at Vadinar in Gujarat to strengthen India’s maritime infrastructure and ship maintenance capabilities.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the development of a modern Ship Repair Facility at Vadinar in Gujarat. The project marks a major step toward strengthening India’s maritime infrastructure and expanding the country’s ship repair ecosystem.

The facility will be jointly developed by Deendayal Port Authority and Cochin Shipyard Limited with a combined investment of approximately ₹1,570 crore.

State-of-the-Art Brownfield Ship Repair Project

The project will be developed as a brownfield facility and will include advanced maritime infrastructure such as:

  • A 650-metre-long jetty
  • Two large floating dry docks
  • Modern repair workshops
  • Associated marine infrastructure

The facility is designed to handle the repair and maintenance of large commercial ships and foreign-flagged vessels.

Why Vadinar Was Chosen

Vadinar has been identified as an ideal location because of its natural deep draft and strategic connectivity to major international shipping routes. Its proximity to important ports such as Mundra Port and Kandla Port further enhances its suitability for large-scale ship repair operations.

The western coast location is expected to significantly improve repair turnaround time for vessels operating in the Arabian Sea region.

Addressing India’s Ship Repair Capacity Gap

Currently, India lacks sufficient infrastructure to repair large vessels exceeding 230 metres in length.

The new Vadinar facility will bridge this gap by enabling repairs of ships up to 300 metres long.

This capability will allow India to undertake high-value ship repair work domestically instead of depending on foreign shipyards. As a result, the project is expected to reduce foreign exchange outflow and strengthen India’s self-reliance in the maritime sector.

Employment Generation and MSME Growth

The project is also expected to create substantial employment opportunities in the region. According to official estimates:

  • Around 290 direct jobs will be created
  • Approximately 1,100 indirect jobs will be generated

The facility is expected to support sectors such as:

  • Ship repair services
  • Logistics and transportation
  • Marine engineering
  • Ancillary maritime industries
  • MSMEs and local businesses

The project will also encourage skill development and create a broader maritime industrial ecosystem in Gujarat.

Alignment with Maritime India Vision 2030

The Vadinar Ship Repair Facility aligns with the government’s long-term maritime development goals under:

  • Maritime India Vision 2030
  • Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047

These initiatives aim to transform India into a global maritime hub by improving port infrastructure, shipbuilding, logistics efficiency, and coastal economic development.

Strengthening India’s Maritime Competitiveness

With improved repair capabilities on the western coast, the project is expected to enhance the competitiveness of Indian ports and attract more international shipping traffic.

The development of the Vadinar facility represents an important milestone in India’s efforts to modernize its maritime sector, reduce dependence on foreign infrastructure, and build a strong domestic ship repair industry.
