PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre in Banaskantha, GujaratThe ₹325-crore Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre aims to produce 25,000 high-quality embryos annually.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre (BBBRC) at Bhildi in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district on 30 October 2026.

Developed at an investment of approximately ₹325 crore across 127 acres, the advanced facility aims to produce 25,000 high-quality embryos annually using modern reproductive technologies to improve indigenous cattle breeds, enhance milk production and strengthen India’s dairy sector.

Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre Inaugurated in Gujarat

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre (BBBRC) at Bhildi in Banaskantha district, Gujarat, on 30 October 2026.
  • Developed by Banas Dairy with technical guidance from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), the centre has been established as a state-of-the-art facility for scientific cattle breeding and genetic improvement.
  • Spread across approximately 127 acres, the project has been developed at a cost of around ₹325 crore. It has received support under the Central Government’s Rashtriya Gokul Mission, which focuses on the conservation and genetic improvement of indigenous bovine breeds.
  • The centre is expected to strengthen India’s livestock breeding infrastructure through advanced reproductive technologies, high-quality genetic resources and scientific research.

Key Features of the Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre

The BBBRC has been designed to accelerate the genetic improvement of indigenous cattle and buffalo breeds.

Its major features include:

  • Annual production target: Approximately 25,000 high-quality embryos.
  • Project investment: Around ₹325 crore.
  • Location: Bhildi, Banaskantha district, Gujarat.
  • Total area: Approximately 127 acres.
  • Technical guidance: National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).
  • Government support: Rashtriya Gokul Mission.
  • Core objective: Genetic improvement, better breeding outcomes and increased milk productivity.

The centre will also facilitate access to superior-quality semen, embryos and breeding services for livestock farmers.

Advanced IVF and Embryo Transfer Technology

One of the most important features of the centre is its use of advanced reproductive technologies.

The facility will use techniques such as:

1. Ovum Pick-Up (OPU): A reproductive technology used to collect eggs from genetically superior female animals.

2. In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF): The collected eggs are fertilised with selected sperm under controlled laboratory conditions to produce embryos.

3. Embryo Transfer Technology (ETT): High-quality embryos are transferred into recipient animals to produce offspring carrying desirable genetic characteristics.

These technologies can help multiply the offspring of genetically superior animals more rapidly than conventional breeding methods.

The centre aims to produce around 25,000 high-quality embryos every year, accelerating the availability of improved cattle and buffalo breeds.

Indigenous Cattle and Buffalo Breeds to Be Improved

The Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre will focus on important Indian cattle and buffalo breeds.

These indigenous breeds are important for India’s livestock economy because of their adaptation to local climatic conditions and their contribution to dairy production.

The centre will support the preservation and genetic improvement of these valuable breeds.

How Will the Centre Benefit Dairy Farmers?

The new facility is expected to benefit dairy farmers, particularly small and marginal livestock owners.

1. Higher Milk Production: Genetic improvement can help farmers obtain animals with better milk-producing potential.

2. Better Quality Animals: Scientific breeding will support the development and multiplication of genetically superior cattle and buffaloes.

3. Affordable Breeding Services: Farmers are expected to gain access to quality semen, embryos and breeding services at affordable rates.

4. Lower Livestock Maintenance Costs: Improved productivity may help farmers achieve higher milk output with fewer animals, reducing pressure on fodder, water and other resources.

5. Stronger Rural Livelihoods: Better dairy productivity can support rural employment, cooperative activities and household incomes.

Women are also expected to benefit because they play a significant role in India’s dairy and livestock management activities.

Role of Rashtriya Gokul Mission in Indigenous Cattle Development

The Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) is a Central Government initiative launched in December 2014 to conserve and develop indigenous bovine breeds.

The mission focuses on:

  • Conservation and development of indigenous cattle and buffalo breeds.
  • Genetic improvement through scientific breeding.
  • Expansion of artificial insemination services.
  • Availability of high-quality breeding bulls and semen.
  • Increased productivity of indigenous bovine populations.
  • Promotion of modern reproductive technologies.

The Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre complements these objectives by strengthening advanced breeding and genetic research infrastructure.

Significance for India’s Dairy Industry

  • India is one of the world’s largest milk-producing countries, and livestock plays an important role in rural livelihoods, agricultural income and food security.
  • The establishment of BBBRC represents an effort to modernise India’s dairy sector through science, technology and cooperative participation.
  • By accelerating the multiplication of genetically superior animals, the facility aims to improve the productivity of indigenous breeds and strengthen the availability of quality breeding resources.
  • It may also contribute to reducing dependence on imported genetic resources and promoting India’s indigenous cattle breeds.
