Right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori has officially been declared the winner of Peru’s closely contested presidential election, nearly a month after the runoff vote was held on 7 June. The result marks a significant political shift in Latin America, as conservative leaders gain ground across the region.
According to Peru’s electoral court, Keiko Fujimori secured 50.135% of the vote, narrowly defeating left-wing rival Roberto Sánchez, who received 49.865%.
The final certified margin was less than 50,000 votes, making it one of the closest presidential elections in Peru’s recent history.
At 51 years old, Fujimori has now achieved victory on her fourth attempt to become Peru’s president. During her campaign, she pledged to strengthen law enforcement, crack down on organised crime, revive the economy, and improve public security.
Following the announcement, Fujimori said she would assume the presidency “with responsibility, humility and a deep sense of duty.” She also emphasized that the transition period would be an opportunity to engage in dialogue and prepare for the challenges the country faces.
“Each day of this transition process is an opportunity to listen, engage in dialogue and arrive prepared at the start of the new government,” she said.
Her victory comes alongside the election of Abelardo de la Espriella in Colombia, a development many analysts see as reflecting a broader rightward political shift across Latin America.
Despite the dispute, Peru’s electoral authorities have certified the final vote count, clearing the way for Fujimori to begin the presidential transition.
