The Union Cabinet has approved the extension of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) until December 2028, continuing the Government of India’s major initiative to provide safe and adequate drinking water through functional household tap connections (FHTCs) to all rural households.

Key Highlights of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM):

  • The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is a flagship rural water supply programme launched by the Government of India in August 2019.
  • The mission aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water through Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) to every rural household in the country.
  • With the new Cabinet decision, the programme will continue till December 2028 to complete remaining connections and strengthen water infrastructure.

Key Features:

  • Ensure tap water supply to all rural households.
  • Provide 55 litres of drinking water per person per day.
  • Guarantee safe, clean, and regular water supply in villages.
  • Improve public health, sanitation, and quality of life in rural areas.
  • Promotion of local participation through Village Water & Sanitation Committees (VWSCs).
  • Use of modern technology and IoT-based monitoring systems for water supply management.
  • Encouragement of source sustainability, including rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge.
  • Emphasis on water quality monitoring at the village level.

Progress So Far:

  • At the time of launch in 2019, only about 3.23 crore rural households had tap water connections.
  • As of recent updates, over 14 crore rural households have been provided with tap water under the scheme.
  • Several states and Union Territories have already achieved 100% household tap water coverage.

Achievements:

Funding Pattern:

The scheme is implemented jointly by the Central and State Governments:

  • 90:10 for Himalayan and North-Eastern states.
  • 50:50 for other states.
  • 100% central funding for Union Territories.
