Digital payments platform PhonePe has launched the PhonePe ‘RuPay On-The-Go’ Card, a National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) designed to make public transport payments faster and more convenient.

The initiative supports the Government of India’s “One Nation One Card” vision, which aims to create a unified digital payment system for transit services across the country.

All-in-One Transit Payment Solution

The PhonePe ‘On-The-Go’ Card functions as a multi-purpose transit card, allowing users to make tap-and-pay transactions across multiple transportation services.

It can be used on various NCMC-enabled platforms, including:

  • Metro rail systems

  • Public buses

  • Local trains

  • Highway tolls

  • Parking services

Because the system is interoperable, commuters can use the same card across different cities and transport networks in India.

Works Even Without Internet

A major feature of the new card is its offline payment capability.

The card operates on a prepaid stored-value model, where the balance is stored directly on the card’s chip. This allows commuters to complete transactions without requiring internet connectivity, making it particularly useful in areas with limited network coverage.

Users can load up to ₹2,000 on the card, while the maximum offline transaction limit is ₹500.

Instant Issuance for Commuters

The PhonePe ‘On-The-Go’ Card can be issued instantly, improving accessibility for daily commuters.

Initially, the card will be available at **Hyderabad Metro ticket counters in partnership with L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited.

To obtain the card, users need to:

  1. Verify their phone number using a one-time password (OTP)

  2. Purchase the card at the ticket counter

  3. Load money using UPI, cash, or debit/credit cards

Usable Across Multiple Indian Cities

Although the card is being introduced first in Hyderabad, it is fully compatible with NCMC-enabled transport systems nationwide.

This means commuters can use and recharge the card in cities such as:

  • Delhi

  • Mumbai

  • Chennai

  • Bengaluru

PhonePe’s Entry into the Transit Payment Segment

Commenting on the launch, Deep Agrawal said the new card aims to simplify payments for millions of people who rely on public transport daily.

He noted that the card enables fast tap-and-pay transactions without internet connectivity, integrating PhonePe’s digital wallet ecosystem with India’s public transport infrastructure.

Expanding Digital Mobility Payments

The launch marks **PhonePe’s entry into the transit payment ecosystem. The company plans to expand the service by integrating the card with more transport providers across India.

In addition to the physical card, PhonePe will continue offering digital ticketing, transit passes, and smart card recharge services through the PhonePe app, creating a complete digital commuting experience for users.
