• The Kerala Police has launched a new safety initiative called “Nirbhaya Nisha” aimed at protecting women travelling during late-night hours.
  • The programme focuses on rapid police response, enhanced surveillance, and technology-based emergency assistance.
  • The initiative was introduced to improve security for women who work late shifts, travel at night, or face emergency situations during nighttime hours.

What is the ‘Nirbhaya Nisha’ Initiative?

  • ‘Nirbhaya Nisha’ is a statewide police programme designed to strengthen women’s safety between 9 PM and 5 AM, when security risks tend to increase.
  • The system integrates emergency services, mobile technology, and police patrol units to provide quick assistance.

Key Features of the Initiative:

1. SOS Emergency Alert System

Women can send emergency alerts through the POL App or the national 112 emergency helpline, which immediately connects them to nearby police units.

2. Pink Patrol Units

Special Pink Patrol teams will conduct night patrolling in major cities and vulnerable areas to ensure women’s safety.

3. Monitoring of Night Hotspots

Police will closely monitor locations such as:

  • Transport hubs
  • IT parks
  • Hospitals
  • Colleges
  • Major public roads

These places often witness heavy night-time movement.

4. Faster Police Response

Control rooms across districts are linked with patrol teams to ensure quick response to distress calls.

Why the Initiative is Important:

  • With more women working in sectors like healthcare, IT, hospitality, and transportation, late-night commuting has become common.
  • The Kerala government aims to ensure that women can travel safely without fear.
  • The initiative also strengthens Kerala’s broader women safety and smart policing strategy.
