The 7th edition of the annual Joint Military Exercise ‘DHARMA GUARDIAN’ between the Indian Army and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) commenced at the Foreign Training Node in Chaubattia, Uttarakhand. The exercise is being conducted from 24 February to 9 March 2026.

This edition features a 120-member contingent from each country. The JGSDF is represented by troops from the 32nd Infantry Regiment, while the Indian Army contingent comprises personnel from the Ladakh Scouts. Held alternately in India and Japan, Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN continues to serve as a vital pillar of defence cooperation between the two nations.

The primary objective of the exercise is to strengthen military collaboration and enhance the combined capability of both forces to conduct joint operations in semi-urban terrain. Over the two-week period, participating troops will work towards achieving high physical fitness standards, refining joint planning procedures, and synchronising tactical drills.

The exercise is centred on the integration of modern technology, improved interoperability, and contemporary operational practices.

Key Tactical Activities Include:

  • Establishment of a Temporary Operating Base
  • Development of an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) grid
  • Setting up Mobile Vehicle Check Posts
  • Conducting Cordon and Search Operations in hostile environments
  • Execution of Heliborne Operations
  • Undertaking House Intervention Drills

Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN reflects the growing strategic partnership between India and Japan and underscores their shared commitment to regional stability, security cooperation, and operational synergy.
