India–Bhutan Postal MoU signed to enhance connectivity, digital remittance, and cross-border trade
  • India and Bhutan have taken another important step in strengthening their close partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on postal cooperation.
  • This agreement is expected to improve cross-border connectivity, make postal services more efficient, and support the growing trade between the two neighbouring nations.
  • One of the most notable highlights is the upcoming launch of the UPU–UPI cross-border remittance system.
  • This initiative will allow people in India and Bhutan to send money easily and affordably through the postal network.
  • By linking the Universal Postal Union (UPU) PosTransfer system with India’s UPI platform, the service aims to make digital remittances faster and more accessible for citizens in both countries.
  • The agreement also focuses on capacity building and skill development.

  • Bhutanese postal officials will take part in training programmes in India, including at the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai National Postal Academy and other institutions under the Department of Posts.
  • These programmes will cover areas such as operations, management, and new technologies in the postal sector.
  • In addition, both countries have agreed to work closely in the technology domain.
  • Bhutan will benefit from India Post’s experience in digital systems, including innovations like the Digital Address Code, which can improve logistics, addressing, and overall service delivery.
  • The two sides also highlighted the importance of cultural ties, especially through philately.
  • Bhutan Post has been invited to participate in stamp exhibitions in India, further strengthening people-to-people connections.
