Padma Shri Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao (D.Y.) Patil, founder of the renowned D.Y. Patil Group and former Governor of Tripura, Bihar and West Bengal, passed away in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, at the age of 90.
Fondly known as “Dada,” Dr. Patil dedicated more than six decades to public service, education, healthcare and social welfare. His passing marks the end of an extraordinary journey that transformed professional education for millions of students across India.
Humble Beginnings to National Leadership
Born on October 22, 1935, in Ambap village of Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, Dr. Patil belonged to an agricultural family. A brilliant student, he completed M.A., LL.B. and Ph.D. degrees and secured first rank in the law examination conducted by Shivaji University.
His public life began in 1957, when he was elected to the Kolhapur Municipal Council as a Congress candidate. He later represented the Panhala Assembly constituency in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1967 to 1978.
Served as Governor of Three States
Dr. Patil later held several important constitutional positions.
He served as Governor of Tripura from November 2009 to March 2013, followed by Governor of Bihar from March 2013 to November 2014. During 2014, he also held additional charge as Governor of West Bengal.
Throughout his tenure, he consistently advocated education-led development, social welfare and inclusive growth.
Founder of the D.Y. Patil Education Empire
Although he had an accomplished political career, Dr. Patil’s greatest contribution came through education.
