In a major step towards strengthening India’s coal gasification ambitions, Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd (BCGCL) and Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, have signed a land leasing agreement for a coal-to-ammonium nitrate project in Odisha.
A Landmark Coal Gasification Initiative
The upcoming project will establish a 2,000 tonnes per day (TPD) ammonium nitrate facility, marking a significant milestone in India’s efforts to modernize its coal sector.
What makes this project particularly noteworthy is that it will use indigenous coal gasification technology developed by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. This positions the initiative as one of India’s first major coal gasification projects based on homegrown technology.
Boost to Self-Reliance and Innovation
According to the Ministry of Coal, the project reflects:
- A strong push towards self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat)
- Advancement in domestic technological capabilities
- Reduced dependence on foreign technologies in energy and chemicals
The move aligns with India’s broader strategy of enhancing energy security and industrial innovation.
Strategic Use of Coal Resources
The project will be set up on approximately 350 acres of land currently under the possession of MCL in Odisha.
It has been made possible due to progressive policy reforms introduced by the Ministry of Coal, which now allow:
- Utilisation of coal-bearing land for gasification projects
- Expansion into value-added coal-based products
- Diversification of the coal sector beyond traditional uses
Why Coal Gasification Matters
Coal gasification is a process that converts coal into synthetic gas (syngas), which can then be used to produce:
- Chemicals like ammonium nitrate
- Fertilisers
- Fuels and industrial feedstock
This helps in:
- Improving efficiency of coal usage
- Reducing environmental impact compared to direct burning
- Supporting import substitution in critical sectors
Conclusion
The Odisha coal-to-ammonium nitrate project marks a transformational step in India’s coal sector, combining policy support, indigenous technology, and strategic resource utilisation. As India moves towards cleaner and more efficient energy solutions, such initiatives will play a key role in shaping a diversified and self-reliant energy future.
