The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Voltas Limited, a Tata Group enterprise, to promote collaboration between industry and start-ups in the cooling and smart appliance sector.

The partnership aims to encourage innovation by connecting emerging start-ups with industry expertise and infrastructure to develop advanced technologies.

Focus on Emerging Technologies

The collaboration will engage start-ups working in several advanced technology areas related to the cooling and appliance ecosystem. These include:

  • Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) technologies

  • Advanced control systems and power electronics

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning-based diagnostics

  • IoT-enabled smart appliances

  • Digitalisation in manufacturing and service operations

Through this initiative, the government seeks to strengthen innovation and accelerate technology adoption in the sector.

Innovation Challenges and Hackathons

Under the partnership, the **Startup India initiative of DPIIT and Voltas Limited will explore organising innovation challenges through the Bharat Start-up Grand Challenge.

Hackathons may also be conducted to address real-world industry challenges and encourage start-ups to develop practical solutions.

Support for Start-ups

Through this collaboration, DPIIT will work with Voltas to identify promising start-ups aligned with emerging industry requirements.

Selected start-ups may receive several forms of support, including:

  • Mentorship from industry experts

  • Technical guidance

  • Access to testing infrastructure

  • Opportunities for market linkages

This support will help start-ups develop and refine their products for real-world applications.

Key Innovation Areas

The initiative will particularly focus on technologies such as:

  • Energy-efficient cooling systems

  • Air quality monitoring and filtration technologies

  • Advanced inverter control systems

  • Predictive maintenance solutions

  • Refrigerant safety technologies

  • Digital tools for installation and servicing

Proof-of-Concept and Field Trials

Start-ups selected under the programme may also participate in Proof-of-Concept (PoC) projects with Voltas engineering teams. These programmes will allow start-ups to test their technologies and integrate them with existing industry solutions.

In addition, Voltas’s service network may be used to conduct field trials, helping start-ups evaluate and refine their innovations in real-world conditions.

Strengthening Industry–Start-up Ecosystem

Speaking about the initiative, Sanjiv noted that the collaboration aligns with the government’s broader efforts to strengthen partnerships between industry and start-ups, particularly in advanced manufacturing and emerging technologies.

Such partnerships can help start-ups develop solutions that directly address industry needs while accelerating innovation in the manufacturing sector.

The collaboration is expected to strengthen the innovation ecosystem in India’s cooling and smart appliance industry while providing new opportunities for start-ups to scale their technologies.
