Defence Minister Rajnath Singh released the strategic document Defence Forces Vision 2047: A Roadmap for a Future-Ready Indian Military at South Block on March 10, 2026.

The vision document has been prepared by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff and aims to transform India’s defence forces into a modern, technologically advanced and integrated military capable of supporting the country’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

Blueprint for a Modern Military

The document outlines a comprehensive strategy for reforming the Indian Armed Forces by focusing on capability development, organisational changes and strategic planning. It seeks to prepare the military to deal with the rapidly evolving global security environment, emerging technologies and complex geostrategic challenges.

According to the vision, the future military force will be integrated, multi-domain and agile, capable of responding to threats across land, sea, air, cyber and space domains. The aim is to strengthen India’s ability to deter adversaries and safeguard its expanding strategic interests.

Focus on Jointness and Coordination

One of the key pillars of the vision is greater jointness among the three services—Army, Navy and Air Force. The roadmap emphasises improved coordination in areas such as:

  • Strategic planning

  • Military operations

  • Capability development

This approach is intended to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen collaboration across the armed forces.

Technology and Innovation

The document also highlights the importance of advanced technologies and innovation in modern warfare. It stresses the need to adopt emerging technologies, modern training systems and new operational concepts to ensure that the Indian military remains prepared for future battlefield challenges.

Boost to Indigenous Defence Capabilities

Another major focus of the roadmap is Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence. The vision encourages the development and adoption of indigenous defence technologies and equipment, tailored to India’s security requirements.

Strengthening domestic defence manufacturing is expected to enhance military readiness while also contributing to economic growth and technological advancement.

Phased Development Plan

The roadmap proposes a phased approach to building military capabilities. It outlines goals across:

  • Short-term priorities

  • Medium-term capability development

  • Long-term strategic transformation

This structured plan will guide reforms, defence partnerships and capability development over the coming decades.

Whole-of-Nation Approach to Security

Recognising the complex nature of modern security threats, the document calls for a whole-of-nation approach to national security. This involves integrating military power with diplomatic, economic and technological strengths to protect India’s interests.

The ultimate objective is to ensure that by 2047, the centenary of India’s independence, the country possesses a globally respected, technologically advanced and combat-ready military.
