The Indian Coast Guard has commissioned ICGS Achal, a new-generation fast patrol vessel of the Adamya-class series, at Goa Shipyard Limited. 

The commissioning marks a significant enhancement in the operational capability of the Indian Coast Guard and strengthens India’s maritime security infrastructure.

Meaning and Role of ICGS Achal

The vessel has been named “Achal,” meaning “firm” or “steadfast,” symbolising the Indian Coast Guard’s unwavering commitment towards:

  • safeguarding India’s maritime interests,
  • protecting lives at sea,
  • and ensuring coastal and offshore security.

The ship will undertake a wide range of maritime operations, including:

  • coastal and offshore surveillance,
  • interdiction missions,
  • search and rescue (SAR) operations,
  • anti-smuggling activities,
  • and marine pollution response.

Commissioning Ceremony

The vessel was formally commissioned by A. Anbarasu, Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisition), Ministry of Defence.

The ceremony was attended by:

  • Tekur Sashi Kumar, Inspector General and Commander of Coast Guard Region (North-West),
  • senior officials from the Central and State Governments,
  • and representatives of Goa Shipyard Limited.

Indigenous Design and Construction

ICGS Achal has been designed and built indigenously by Goa Shipyard Limited.

The vessel incorporates more than 50 percent indigenous components, reflecting India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

The project aligns with the Government of India’s:

  • Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative,
  • and the Make in India programme.

Strengthening Maritime Security

The commissioning of ICGS Achal is part of the Indian Coast Guard’s ongoing fleet expansion programme aimed at improving:

  • coastal security,
  • maritime surveillance,
  • operational readiness,
  • and rapid response capability.

With increasing strategic importance of the Indian Ocean Region and rising maritime security challenges, the induction of modern patrol vessels such as ICGS Achal is expected to significantly enhance India’s capability to monitor and secure its maritime frontiers.
